Behind “Happy Fucking Birthday”

I managed-barely-to publish my third Raven and June story to Pixie’s Place yesterday. It wasn’t as easy as i expected it to be. I had to break it into parts before the forum software there would accept it.

In any case, I thought some people who read it might be interested in its development. Here is a little “behind the scenes” story about Happy Fucking Birthday:

Happy Fucking Birthday was a lot harder to write than I had expected.

I had planned on writing it for roughly ten years before I actually started, so you’d think I had a good idea how it was going to work. I mean, I’d already written Merry Fucking Christmas nearly fifteen years ago, and Raven for Lunch roughly ten years ago. It was clear from the ending of RFL that I had intended to write HFB way back then.

For some reason, I couldn’t seem to get a handle on how it should begin, or what should happen. There were so many possibilities. I’d established Ron’s infidelities in the first story, as well as having June have sex with both Brian and Raven. I’d established a purely lesbian relationship between Raven and June in the second. What was there to accomplish in the third?

Finally I started by writing about five pages of how Raven takes June to her favorite adult store to prepare for parties for both Ron and Brian. While there Raven pointed out the cute, innocent-looking, girl cashier and told her how she caught the girl masturbating while watching a couple on the security cameras in the changing room. Then I had them choose lingerie and try it out, and then look for signs that the cashier had been watching them.

That’s where the story sat, unfinished, for about six months.

I had intended to go on about the planning for Ron and Brian’s parties. How Raven and June would get so turned on by the planning that they would end up having several trysts before and between the parties. But none of that ended up getting typed out. Raven and June stood there, at the counter, waiting for me to do something, anything!, for over six months.

The problem was that none of it seemed right. While the characters were doing the right things, more or less, and were saying the right things, something seemed off.

Eventually, right before I went to bed one night, it hit me: The Raven and June stories have never been about planning anything.

As soon as I came to that realization, I threw out everything I had written and started over from scratch.

It was pretty easy to get back into it from that point. June still has that little schoolgirl crush on Raven. That’s natural.

Raven is still in control of everything. That’s natural.

What made this interesting to me from the beginning was giving Ron something to do. In the first story Ron had maybe a dozen lines. He doesn’t make an appearance in the second one at all. But his actions in the first story are key to what happens in all of these stories. I seriously doubt that June would have ever cheated on him if she hadn’t caught him fucking Raven in the first story.

Which brings up Raven. Now, how much do you think she had to do with the direction of these stories? She always seems to be in control. I don’t know about you, but my gut feeling is that everything in these stories has gone by her plan. What plan? To take Ron down a notch.

By the end of this story he knows who really is the master of his universe, and it isn’t him.

Of course, nothing ever goes exactly to plan. Ron doesn’t take the reveal that his wife and Raven know each other nearly as well as Raven thought he would. She didn’t bring him down a notch, she shattered his fragile self-image and put him under so much stress that I got to write the funniest scene I’ve ever written to date.

Thanks Raven! That was fun!
